AS PM Tony Blair reveals his 50-page dossier on Iraq, claiming Saddam Hussein has a growing programme of weapons of mass destruction, Swindon's two MPs and the town's anti-war and church leaders give their views.

Julia Drown 'We should avoid military action if at all possible'

Julia Drown, MP for South Swindon:

"I recognise the concerns my constituents raise with me.

They don't want to see military action on Iraq with the horror that brings. But nor do they want the appalling human rights and weapons threats which are there under Saddam Hussein to continue.

It has taken the threat of military action for Saddam Hussein to invite the weapons inspectors back.

That pressure needs to be maintained and if we can avoid military action we should.

I am pushing for all diplomatic means to be used, but at this stage we can't rule out military action if we are to tackle the threats posed by Iraq's non-compliance with important UN resolutions."

Andy Newman'War wouldn't be justified'

Andy Newman, of Swindon Stop the War Coalition:

"The dossier of evidence doesn't tell us anything new. It tells a compelling story that Saddam Hussein is a brutal man, and we cannot trust him.

However, it falls a long way short of proving that he is a current danger. None of the six countries surrounding Iraq feel threatened by him.

War will lead to the deaths of thousands of civilians, it will put British servicemen's lives at risk, it will destabilise the Middle East, it will make Britain a target for terrorism and an increase in oil prices could lead to recession and job losses.

We are told that war is justified because Iraq has flouted UN resolutions, but Israel has defied more UN resolutions than anyone, has invaded its neighbouring countries and already has 200 nuclear warheads.

This double standard is no accident, the real motive behind US policy in the Middle East is all about oil."

Michael Wills 'My support is with PM'

Michael Wills, MP for North Swindon:

"I think the House made the case extremely forcefully of why we must continue to keep the pressure up on Saddam Hussein. The dossier released shows just dangerous this man is.

He has abused the chances he has been given and we must not let him get away with it.

I am very, very supportive of the Prime Minister in this matter."

Rev Tony Attwood 'Don't act without UN approval'

Reverend Tony Attwood, parish priest of St Augustine's in Rodbourne and church and society advisor for Swindon's churches, has written to George W Bush, Tony Blair and Iraqi President Kofi Annan on behalf of the Swindon Churches Forum. He said:

"We are urging our leaders, representatives and members of Swindon's churches to respond to the growing crisis in the Middle East with prayers and whatever actions seem appropriate to further the peaceful resolution of conflict.

We acknowledge the pain felt around the world and particularly in the United States following the September 11 attacks, and share the worldwide concern and alarm about the US's aims to achieve regime change in Iraq and the unknown consequences of such action.

We urge the US and UK not to embark on a 'war on terrorism' without a mandate for action from the United Nations.

Therefore, we call on all parties to act within the boundaries of international law and with respect for human rights.

We urge Iraq to destroy its weapons of mass destruction and guarantee full respect for its citizens and urge the US, UK and other allies to accept the most effective way of combating terrorism is to be found in building a more just world."
