COMMONSENSE did prevail in the end over the proposed car parking increases.
However the ruling Tory group did a complete U-turn in the face of massive opposition. It's a pity they didn't resolve the issue of Station Road car park, which will remain under-utilised.
What this affair also highlights is the stupid way the whole issue of transport is dealt with in isolation.
Car parking charges dealt with one week, proposed reduction in public transport subsidies to be debated in November and the thorny issue of residents' parking not even given an airing.
These issues are closely inter-related and the only way to solve the problems that arise from these issues is by treating the subject as a whole.
I am firmly of the belief that you need to make Station Road attractive for both commuters and medium-long term visitors.
The only way to achieve this is by differential pricing.
I tried to set the ball rolling at the Kennet meeting this week by proposing that we freeze charges at Station Road.
This was rejected out of hand by the Tory ruling group.
I feel over time one would not lose revenue due to increasing usage. Then you would be able to address the whole issue of residents' parking because Station Road would be a lot more attractive to commuters.
I have raised the issue of residents' parking a number of times but other things have taken priority.
I will try to ensure that this is moved further up the list of priorities. Victoria, Commercial and adjoining roads have endured this problem for too long and need attention paid to this issue.
It is not an easy problem to solve. It will take a great deal of patience and diplomacy.
The residents' scheme at Sutton Place and Tylees Court has worked well for a number of years and could be the model for the future.
However, the crucial thing is that all these issues are treated as an area of common concern. Then we may have a chance of success which would appeal to a much wider audience.
