Frozen food-to-ice cream group Birds Eye Wall's is cutting 320 jobs at a factory.
The site in Gloucester, which employs 773 staff overall, makes ice creams such as Cornetto, Solero and Mag-num.
Birds Eye Wall's, which is owned by Anglo-Dutch consumer giant Unilever, said there was an urgent requirement to lower costs at the plant.
Birds Eye Wall's stressed the group intended to keep Gloucester as a centre of manufacturing excellence but this could only be achieved if the site remained competitive.
The group is aiming to slash costs by £12 million at the factory.
Chairman James Hill said: "We have had to make some difficult decisions early so that we can create a strong platform for growth going forward."
