I have been following the debate regarding a cinema for Trowbridge, or should I say lack of one, with interest.
I would agree that it would be nice to have a cinema somewhere within the district but I would point out that doesn't have to be Trowbridge as we do have five towns within our district.
During my term of office as chairman of West Wiltshire District Council, both I and officers worked hard to try and bring a cinema to the district, but the truth is no operator was interested.
I remember well talking to a operator who stated that he would rather invest in larger towns and be sure of a return as we were far to small for his company to invest in. Another showed interest in turning Castle Place back into a cinema but would only do so if the council would consider a subsidy of more than £100,000 a year.
The owner of the GEC Site in Melksham has tried hard and failed to bring a cinema to the site.
I know for a fact that members and officers of the West Wiltshire District Council are working hard to bring a cinema to the district, however if the operators aren't interested in investing in the area it makes life rather hard.
