I WRITE in response to the letter about the fact that the fire engine in the Trowbridge Carnival parade was manned by full-time firefighters (Wiltshire Times, September 13).
What a trite and pathetic condemnation of a professional fire service, recognised as one of the best brigades in the country.
I wonder if the anonymous letter writer had paused for one moment to reflect on the events that took place in New York just one year ago and the incredible and gallant job the fire service rendered to those people.
Perhaps he or she could answer the following questions:
1) When have whole time fire fighters not shown an interest in local affairs?
2) Put a time span on the last occasion whole time fire fighters headed the carnival?
The letter writer has inferred they have never paraded the carnival.
Whole-time fire fighters do not seek attention by leading carnivals, their job is 24 hours a day 365 days a year, being in a position to respond to emergency and other calls.
Where does he suggest they are most needed?
JAMES BERRETT-DOWNS,
Trowbridge.
