It's only the second qualifying round, but already Chippenham Town are the only local non-league side left in the FA Cup.

And the reason the Bluebirds are still standing is thanks, in part, to the fact their newly-found Dr Martens Premier Division status has give them a bye to this stage.

But in a barren FA Cup year for local part-timers, Tommy Saunders aims to take his solitary flag bearers to the first round proper.

After leading Chippenham to back-to-back promotions and a Wembley appearance, Saunders burning ambition remains a showdown with a league club in the world's most famous knockout competition.

Chippenham host Weymouth tomorrow and the omens aren't good Town have crashed at this exact stage in the last two seasons.

Last year, they slipped to a 3-1 defeat to lower league opponents St Blazey.

Twelve months earlier, Saunders' troops were beaten by Gloucester City in a replay at Hardenhuish.

As a form guide, Chippenham drew 1-1 with Weymouth in the league earlier this month and Saunders is expecting another tough test tomorrow.

"They're a decent side and I know their manager Geoff Butler well the banter has been good this week.

"It would be lovely to beat them and get to the first round proper. Everyone knows how highly I regard this competition and how much I'd love that."

As well as the prestige, the money's not to be sniffed at.

Tomorrow's winner will walk away with a cool £7,500, rising to £10,000 in the third qualifying round and £20,000 in the fourth.

And while Saunders has one eye on the prize, his other is on potential signings to bolster his injury-hit squad.

Gareth Davies is out for four weeks after picking up a groin strain. He joins Steve Tweddle and Colin Towler on the treatment table.

So Saunders is in talks with ex-Cirencester midfielder Gary Horgan who is a non-contract player at Bath City.

Fellow Romans Mark Hervin and Paul Milsom are also on the wanted list, but Bath boss Alan Pridham will want fees for both.

Likely Chippenham line up: Bittner, Robinson, Thorne, Gould, Andrews, Badman, Brown, Harrington, Paul, Griffin, Charity
