THE environmental impact of the motor car has become a serious talking point not to mention a factor in buying decisions.
Over the past decade the Motor Show has been a popular platform for the launch of environmental innovations from motor manufacturers.
The Honda Insight was one such vehicle, first shown at the NEC in 1998. Powered by a petrol engine and an electric motor, this 'hybrid vehicle' has been in demand ever since its launch.
Manufacturers will be using the 2002 Motor Show, at the Birmingham NEC from October 23 to November 3, to highlight their responses to the environmental challenge.
Land Rover will be promoting its 'Fragile Earth' policy, which encourages careful driving. The company will also reveal the details of its partnership with the Born Free Foundation, the Royal Geographic Society, Biosphere Expeditions and the China Exploration and Research Society.
Vauxhall will be displaying a range of diesel vehicles as well as its award-winning AUTOnomy fuel-cell concept car.
Ford, which has a few surprises planned for the show, will also be exhibiting vehicles that are kind to the environment.
All these displays reflect the progress the industry has made since the era of leaded petrol 'gas-guzzlers'.
