WORKING in a bed factory proved the perfect start to Fred and Peg Weston's relationship.
The happy Park South pair are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today after meeting while making mattresses in Middlesex.
Fred, 80, of Cranmore Avenue, said: "We made springs and started winking at each other. I asked her out and we have been best pals ever since."
The couple courted for two years and enjoyed dates at the town's skating rink before tying the knot in 1942. But it was a white wedding with a difference because white icing was scarce during the war.
"All the guests had chocolate cake and shared a barrel of beer because it was all I could get my hands on," Fred added.
Thrilled with his wife's cooking skills and good conversation, Fred has loved every minute of married life. Peg, a sewing machinist, fell pregnant and gave birth to their only daughter, Kathleen.
In the 1960s Fred found work in Swindon as a machine setter.
Now both retired, they enjoy taking life in their stride and think the secret to happy marriage is retaining your independence.
Peg, 81, said: "I go to keep fit and like going on day trips. Fred tends to stay at home and have a flutter on the horses. We adore each other's company but also pursue our own interests."
The veteran lovers are enjoying a special meal to mark their anniversary, cooked by their pride and joy, Kathleen.
