A TOTAL of 23 teams fished the first North Wessex Winter League match at Sutton Benger.

Swindon angler Alan Brown, fishing for Devizes AC Blue, won with 33lb 4oz, which included roach, perch and bream.

Pegged below was Darren Reynolds, fishing for Team Elgin. He finished just one good fish behind the winner, taking 28-7-0 of bream using worm as bait presented on the pole.

Ray Rolfe, fishing for Radcot A, topped B sections with a third-placed 21-9-0, including bream and tench. It was big fish all the way with Brian Shuttler (Devizes FB) fourth with 19-15-0. Isis B's Nigel Smith was fifth with 15-12-0.

Carp were needed to boost the weights at High Penn lake in the Cloverleaf match. Ian Hammond came out tops with 11-4-0 ahead of Bill Davies 7-6-0 and Andy Moss 2-12-0.

It turned out to be a great match for the Wednesday Veterans at Great Bedwyn. Ricky Spiteri had a bream which boosted his winning catch to 8lb 4oz to just beat the 8lb roach bag of Colin Dunn. Bamber Sainsbury was third with 7-12-0.

Despite losing two good chub, Mel Mullen still won the BCA match at Hannington with 12lb 8oz of chub and bits taken on caster. Second was Graham Smith who also had chub and bits for 9-4-0 and third was Mal Griffin, who included a 2 1/2 lb barbel in his third placed 5-13-0.

The Peatmoor Roach Cup 10 to 13 years age group was won by Edward Bryant with 6lb 14oz.

Runner-up with 1lb 8oz was Daniel Franklin and in third place with 8.5oz was newcomer Luke Jones. The 14 to 16 years age group was won by Glen Picton with 3lb 4oz. Runner-up with 2lb 15oz was Gareth Jackson and in third place with 2lb 1oz was William Bryant.

419ers AC match was held at Ivy House lakes (island on large lake). Rich Child easily won with four carp taken on luncheon meat for 16lb 13oz. Weights dropped to Chaz Ward 6-12-0 (roach and bream) and third was Martin James 6-6-0 (three small carp).
