THE remaining five matches from the preliminary round of the PPL Presto Print sponsored Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup produced a feast of goals and a couple of shock results.

Third Division Hare and Hounds claimed a cup upset when they ousted Second Division Sutton Benger.

The two teams were involved in a 13 goal thriller which the Hounds edged 7-6 in a game that saw almost every attack produce a goal.

Benger fell behind early on when Paul Revening fired the Hounds ahead. Benger then took control and led 3-1, with Danny Cocker (2) and Paul Watson scoring. The Hounds hit back before the break, through Revening and Nick Mooney, to tie the half-time score at 3-3.

The second period saw both teams make a number of mistakes on the hard, uneven pitch before Benger's Jonny Grogan rifled home a 20 yarder. The Hounds levelled and then took the lead for the first time, with Mooney netting two powerful headers to complete his hat-trick.

Steve Gawke equalised, only for Mooney to score a superb solo effort and his fourth to put the Hounds in the ascendancy once more. Benger pushed players forward in the final 15 minutes looking for an equaliser and were caught out when a goalkeeping error gifted Paul Young the chance to give the Hounds a two-goal cushion and a 7-5 advantage. Benger kept going and when Danny Cocker completed his treble it looked as though the game may well go to extra-time, but the Hounds held on for a 7-6 victory.

Fourth Division Bradstone Rovers claimed the shock result of the day as they defeated Second Division local rivals North Star A 4-1. Rovers, playing their first game for three weeks, opened the scoring through Ryan Kelleher only for Kevin Saunders to pull the home team level.

A substitution turned the game in favour of Rovers, when John Bowman came back to haunt his former club with a double and Alan Eades sealed Rovers' victory when he completed the scoring 15 minutes from time.

Premier Division Westbury Rangers A defeated Southwick Sports and Social Club by the odd goal in five. The Third Division side were unlucky to lose out 3-2 and that was despite trailing 2-0 to a Marc Lanfear brace. Southwick hit back through Gareth Colebrook and Stuart Greenland to make it 2-2, had a goal disallowed and they knew it was not to be their day when Paul Smith hit Rangers' third goal for what was an undeserved win.

Colerne A had an easy passage into the first round proper. Division Three Cooper-Avon were no match for their First Division hosts who hammered the tyre men 11-1. Jamie Bowler helped himself to six goals and Charlie Spirrell (4) and Darren Moore completed the romp, with Rodney Miller claiming Cooper's consolation.

Premier Division Dog and Fox Ashley were just too good for Trowbridge Harriers from the division below. The Dog overcame a potential banana skin with a 3-1 win. Mark Gerrish, Steve Latham and Danny Cottrell shared the Dog's goals and Jamie Burbedge replied.

Premier Division

PROMOTED sides All Cannings A and Hullavington Village have made a great start to their life in the top flight of the Vanitec Computers sponsored league.

All Cannings A continue to top the table following their 3-1 defeat of Percy's FC. Jack Williams, Darren Walters and James Oram scored for the villagers who are going to take some stopping at home this term. Dave Kilmurray was on target for the losers.

With Melksham Motor Spares having withdrawn from the league, Bradford Sports were temporary on the foot of the table, but a 5-2 win over Pack Horse saw them move back up. Charlie Powell found his scoring boots when he put the newsmen ahead and he added a second with a free kick after Steve Richardson had made it 1-1. Powell went on to score four, with Russell Francis completing the five- star performance. Stan Matthews hit the Horse's second.

Division One

WEST End Wanderers have a 100 per cent record and look to be the form side as a 2-1 victory over pre-season favourites Gladstone Liberal Club, who are still searching for their first win of the new term, saw them move into second spot.

Wanderers' goalkeeper Craig Woodruff gave them the perfect start within the first minute in bizarre circumstances when his huge punt upfield eluded everyone, including the Libs goalkeeper. Woodruff was unable to prevent the Libs from equalising when Jason Prades scored from the penalty spot. Nathan Mantle earned the Wanderers both points with his fifth goal of the new campaign.

Westbridge United had Paul Bendell dismissed as they crashed to a 4-1 home defeat against Maud Heath Sports, whose goals came from Dean Slade (2), Adie Simpkins and Matthew Waite scored.

Atworth United came from behind three times to claim a 3-3 draw from their clash with Chippenham Police. Dave Minty was first on the score sheet for the Police, with Stuart Holland canceling out his effort. Former Atworth player Dan Strong restored the Police's lead with Paul Burns levelling matters once more. Max Hardman was on target with the Police's third, with Scott Portsmouth's lightning strike from distance earning Atworth their point.

Division Two

THE game of the day in the division saw old adversaries Biddestone Social Club and Semington Rovers meet at Cuttle Lane, Biddestone, where the visitors bought to an end the home team's run of 22 unbeaten matches by winning 2-1.

Rovers struck first through Bobby Mitchell and if it was not for the heroics of Biddestone goalkeeper Rob Preston they could well have added five more before Biddestone substitute James Tindell tied the score with his first touch after coming on.

Nathan Walker scored a contender for any goal of the season award when he unleashed a powerful free kick from 25yards to seal Semington's fine win.

Chippenham Black Horse destroyed Pig and Whistle United 8-0. Craig Leadbeater (3), Leyton Brown (2), Jonathan Wall (2) and Tony Falcone were the scorers.

Old Lane United twice surrendered a two-goal advantage before settling for a point from a 3-3 draw with Christian Malford. Alan Davies and Dave Scott's efforts for the Old Lane sandwiched Scott Evans' goal. A sublime strike from Mike Austin restored Old Lane's two-goal lead but with Ian Ramsey (2) scoring for Malford a point was all that they took from a game that nearly slipped away from them.

Division Three

HOLT FC annihilated Roadrunners FC 11-4.

In what had promised to be a closely contested affair the form book went out the window as the watching crowd of over 100 witnessed a clinical display of finishing from Adie Mizen's Holt team. Neil Grant led the carnage with six goals and Tom Pang, Mac Elliott, Alex Pollit, Mark Slade and Tim Edgar scored one apiece. Carl Gilbert (2), Steve Ivin and Vinnie Jones replied for Roadrunners.

Darren Griffin netted Rowde's consolation as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Sir Audley's Arms, whose goals came from Steve Mallard (two penalties) and Wayne Burry.

Three goals in the space of four second half minutes, from Alex Fariday, Ben Smith (penalty) and a screamer from Steve Maynard, helped Somerford FC come from behind to defeat Corsham Park Rangers 4-1. Chris Yeo hit Somerford's leveller after Paul Smith had put Rangers ahead on 14 minutes.

AFC Unicorn staged a great fight back to take a point from Corsham Centre. Centre had the better of the first half but only had a John Horne effort to show for their dominance.

Unicorn upped the pace at the start of the second period and were rewarded for their toils when Lee Scutter fashioned an equaliser. An error from Unicorn goalkeeper K Hatherall let in Paul Park to put the Centre back in front.

Unicorn went in search of an equaliser and were caught on the break which saw 16-year-old Liam Ralph finish off a great team move to make it 3-1 to the Centre.

Unicorn never gave up and when Kevin Woolford reduced the arrears with five minutes to go the comeback looked on and it was completed at the death with Scutter heading home his second of the game to snatch a point from a 3-3 stalemate.

Division Four

KSM recorded only their third win since they entered the league last term: a 4-3 victory over Potterne FC saw they move into the top half of the table.

KSM drew first blood before surrendering their advantage and found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 score line as goals from Peter Huntley (2) and Jamie Bayes put Potterne in command.

KSM then staged a remarkable fight back to claim a deserved win, Jason Cole (2, one penalty and Andy Scott (2) proving to be their heroes.

Potterne almost grabbed a point at the death and only the crossbar denied them a point.

An exquisite 25 yard chip from Paul Hussey was Classic FC's only consolation as they suffered their fourth straight defeat of the season. Sam Patton (3), Darren Gray and Lee Saunders all found the net for All Cannings B who claimed a 5-1 win.

Ben James was the Plough's solitary scorer as they suffered their 22nd consecutive defeat. Adam Taylor (2), Martin Woolford, and Jerry Clark, with a 25 yard drive, were Old Road Tavern's scorers in a 4-1 win.
