DRAW specialists Devizes Town were forced to settle for another share of the spoils as a Dave Godley penalty earned Ray Baverstock's side a point at Paulton Rovers on Tuesday 1 October.

The result made it four draws from six league outings for Devizes this term, but moves them above Saturday's opponents Dawlish Town in the Screwfix Direct Premier Division table.

Manager Baverstock was satisfied after seeing his side come from a goal down to take a point.

He said: "I don't know what it is about drawing games. I had the same thing when I was at Cirencester once as well. Overall a point apiece was the right outcome. Both sides had chances and our goalkeeper made a couple of good saves, so I'm pleased at the end of the day.

"It is always difficult when you have a low budget and you go to places like Paulton on a Tuesday night. You can't afford to get everyone there in particularly good time after work, so we did well under the circumstances."

A long punt forward from the home goalkeeper created the opening goal of the night, but Devizes hit back with a leveller before the break.

Dave Godley was upended in the box and the former Chippenham Town forward picked himself up to score from the spot, ending his recent lean spell in front of goal in the process.

Chances fell the way of both teams after the interval, with Devizes goalkeeper Warren Jackson in fine form between the posts to keep the home side at bay.

On loan Chippenham midfielder Giles Harris and substitute Nick Mooney both went close to grabbing a winner at the other end.

Despite another one-point return, Baverstock believes his men are capable of challenging at the top of the Premier Division table.

He said: "We're really keen to push on in the league now. Although it looks like Brislington are running away with it, it is still early days and we aren't far away. We created chances again on Tuesday and, if we start to keep clean sheets, we'll win games.

"That's not a criticism of the defence because the back three were outstanding at Paulton, we've just got to tighten up all round."

Baverstock is unsure whether Harris will be available for Saturday's home game against unbeaten Dawlish.

He said: "Giles played well and I know his capabilities from my time at Cirencester. He works really hard and I'm hoping we can keep him for a while."

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Melksham Town's winning run ended with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of league leaders Brislington at The Conigre. The Bristol side have now won all eight of their league matches this term.
