AN extra lane - or perhaps even two - could be added to Salisbury's heavily congested Southampton Road.
The plan to ease traffic flow on the regularly paralysed artery route into the city was revealed to business bosses by Salisbury's joint transportation officer Graham Wright.
He told a lunch hosted by Salisbury and district chamber of commerce and industry that he recognised the Southampton road was a bone of contention with businesses and agreed that it was the biggest problem people had in coming into the city.
But he said a scheme was under consideration to add another traffic lane, or perhaps eventually two.
"It is very tight along there, so the lanes would be very narrow but, with a 30mph speed limit, we believe it is possible," he said.
Mr Wright said Salisbury district and Wiltshire county councils were hopeful of acquiring the extra land needed for the project and including it as part of the overall Salisbury transport plan.
