AFTER the current news concerning Wembley, I thought I would write showing my support for all the efforts that Calne Town Football Club is putting in towards the town's new sports complex.
I noticed that quite a few committee members were in the town on Saturday raising funds towards the new ground. The proposed plans were fully displayed and were explained to me at length on my request. For those of you who didn't see the plans, they include a stadium complex for the current senior semi-professional team, plus three other full size pitches, and a number of mini soccer pitches. It looks great.
As I understand it, many of the town's youth teams and indeed Sunday teams have to play their soccer out of the town and this new complex would satisfy most of the shortfall of soccer pitches.
The club was raising funds for a complex, which will benefit the whole of the town. How many towns in Wiltshire have a complex of this size? None, we would be the first. I understand that the majority of the money will hopefully be grant aided but the club still needs to find something in the region of £13,000.
So come on all you successful business people, forget Wembley and put your money behind the football club. It makes sense to support a local project.
