MAJOR delays were caused for train users after a World War Two grenade was found close to the railway line on the Swindon side of Box Tunnel yesterday.
Workmen carrying out routine maintenance unearthed the grenade about 4.40pm. All trains were halted from using the tunnel and diversions were put in place between Chippenham and Bristol Parkway via the Badminton line.
Army bomb disposal officers arrived shortly before 7pm and gave the all-clear after confirming the device was not explosive.
Railtrack spokeswoman Morag Rickett said all trains had been stopped from using the section of line as a precaution.
She added that the incident meant Swindon passengers travelling to Bath were subjected to delays, but the disruption ended shortly before 7pm.
