A NEW visitor centre could be set-up in Westbury after plans were developed as part of the regeneration programme for the Wiltshire town.
The Lafarge cement works, nearby, has provided funding for a feasibility study on the project, which looked at the suitability of the old Town Hall building, in the centre of Westbury, as the location for the centre.
The study found the building was suitable for a multiple use scheme, including Westbury Heritage Society, a Tourist Information Centre and a Credit Union banking facility.
English Heritage, Wiltshire Historic Buildings' Trust and Community First, and representatives from Wiltshire District Council indicated support for the project during the study.
John Rogers, chairman of the Westbury & District Community Development Trust Ltd, which has been managing the project, said: "The idea for the Information Centre was the result of an open day held last summer, which gave everyone in Westbury the opportunity to bring forward ideas on the future of the town.
"The positive outcome of the study is an important first step but we've got a lot of work to do now."
Lafarge manager, John Collinson, said: "We have been part of this community for over 30 years and are always keen to play our part in important local projects."
