Bertie the missing terrier has been spotted in the Salisbury Plain area. The dog, who belongs to Jane Goman of Seend, was lost in the Warminster area after being taken for a walk and running down a rabbit hole.
He was seen crossing the road by Knook Camp on September 26 at 2.45pm.
Mrs Goman said: "Needless to say he had gone before I reached the spot.
Bertie was seen in Chitterne on September 5 and his owners believe he is now appearing across the Warminster area in a pattern.
Mrs Goman said: "He was dragging his hind leg, so wasn't able to dash off as he has always done before. The leg was the one in which he has a steel plate and the vet had always told us to expect arthritis to set in.
"The dog catcher says he is obviously living out on the Plain and then sneaking into villages for dustbin raids or to scoff any animal feed available. We need to set up a feeding pattern and apparently the worse condition he is in the better our chances."
Animal experts have said it is vital people do not attempt to catch Bertie as this will drive him away.
Mrs Goman said: "We need for him to feel he hasn't been spotted, so he will stay long enough for us to set up a feeding pattern and then either use a trap or drug him.
"The experts say to turn your back on him and pretend you haven't seen him. Certainly don't use his name or any raised voice, or look him in the eye."
Mrs Goman has appealed for anyone who sees Bertie to call her urgently on (01380) 827121 or 0781 000 2812.
