COUNTY FOOTBALL: WILTSHIRE'S new-look under 18s side moved into the last 32 of the FA County Youth Cup thanks to a first round victory over Devon U18s at Newton Abbot on Saturday 28 September.
Manager Mel Gingell fielded just one player who featured in last season's cup run, but saw his team emerge on top thanks to goals from Devizes Town's Justin Lyle and Kevin Hughes, of Amesbury.
Fine performances by Ross Adams of Highworth, Corsham Town's Russell Lodge and young Melksham Town stopper Jason Grubb kept the in-form hosts at bay.
Wiltshire face Hereford away in the second round early next month.
Gingell said: "I wouldn't say it was a good performance, it was more workmanlike than good. We didn't play as well as I know we can. Our defence won us the game. Ross Adams, Russell Lodge and our goalkeeper, Jason Grubb, were absolutely outstanding.
"Devon were a good side and beat both Exeter and Torquay Youth before they played us. On the day, they were the better side.
"They overran us in midfield, but we kept our shape. We hit them on the break twice and won it."
Gingell is promising to improve his side ahead of the visit to Hereford.
He said: "The fact the game is a month away gives me some time to strengthen the side and play a few friendlies. But the new lads have had a good start and we're through, that's all you want at the end of the day."
