A THIRD of Swindon's school governor vacancies have been filled in the last few months.

It is believed increased publicity and the support of local businesses has led to the renewed interest.

In February, there were 145 vacant positions. Now around 100 positions remain vacant just nine per cent of the town's total of 1,200.

The positions are open to anyone in the community and more people are still being urged to come forward to plug the remaining gap.

David Hughston, governor recruitment officer for Swindon Council, said the situation had certainly got better but added that a new national governor recruitment website, launched by Home Secretary David Blunkett six months ago www.dfes.gov.uk has had no impact in the town.

He said: "Not enough people know about its existence.

"We still have a significant shortfall in some disadvantaged areas and in our special schools. We're looking for more community and parent governors the posts are open to anyone in the community.

"People have been responding though. The average age of governors is 45, but we are seeing more younger people coming in."

He said companies like WH Smith and Nationwide Building Society have recognised the value of school governors and now encourage staff to take part by offering time off to attend meetings.

Posters have been displayed around the town citing 14 infant and primary schools which have urgent vacancies.

These are: Abbey Meads, Chiseldon, Colebrook Junior, Ferndale, Greenmeadow, Haydon Leigh, Lainesmead, Mountford Manor, Oaktree, Pinehurst Infant and Junior, Salt Way, Seven Fields and Toothill.
