THE Volkswagen Lupo TDI was the outright winner in the RAC/Fleet World MPG Marathon, with an overall consumption of 83.75 mpg.
This is the third year in succession the car has won the event.
Against strong competition, the Lupo returned the impressive figure of 83.75 mpg to take the overall trophy.
This figure represents a 30.45 per cent improvement over its EU combined figure of 64.2 mpg, demonstrating the benefits of economy driving techniques as well as the inherent superiority of Volkswagen's high-pressure PD diesel engines.
Using a separate pump and injector for each cylinder means that injection pressures of up to 2050 bar can be achieved, compared with around 1600 bar for the best common-rail rivals.
This greater pressure provides better atomisation of the fuel resulting in class-leading performance and flexibilty along with low emissions and fuel consumption.
