A SCHEME which provides medical help for stray and lost dogs has been launched in Swindon.

The initiative is the brainchild of Angie Newman, 25, of Penhill, who is the stray dog kennel manager at the Drove Veterinary Hospital in Croft Road.

Known as the Strictly Stray Medical Fund, the scheme is still in its early stages and has yet to be registered as an official charity.

But despite being in its infancy, it has already done some good, providing the funds to treat one dog through money raised at collections at car boot sales.

Angie said: "It is very sad seeing dogs come in. We are now heading into the busiest time of year around Bonfire Night and Christmas when many dogs escape from homes or are not wanted.

"Dogs are brought to us by either the police or the council and must be claimed by their owners or re-homed within seven days. They must have left the kennels by the eighth day.

"However, if the animals require medical attention, the funds are not there to carry out the treatment, and the police or council will only provide enough money to make the dog's stay more comfortable."

To become a fully-fledged charity, the fund is looking for more volunteers to form a committee. If you think you can help, call Angie on Swindon 522483 .
