PEOPLE in the hamlet of Hodson will discover next week whether they have won their bid to ban outsiders from driving past their homes.

The campaign for an 'access only' restriction has made Hodson's 26 households unpopular with neighbouring villages.

Chiseldon residents have compiled a 500-name petition against the move and Wroughton Parish Council has registered its "strong opposition".

Its submission to Swindon Council says: "Road closures and restrictions merely shift the problem to someone else's backyard."

Hodson residents began their campaign to get the B4005 through the village closed in February, when they submitted a 50-signature petition to Swindon Council.

They claim verges on the lane through the village are being damaged by traffic and say the area's "rural ambience" is being destroyed.

An access only restriction would cost up to £3,000 to implement and make it illegal to drive through Hodson without stopping.

Police and council officers have already admitted that an access only order could be difficult to enforce.

Swindon Council's transport commission meets on Tuesday evening to rule on the issue.

Hodson residents hope the council will accept a compromise deal agreed with Chiseldon Council, which limits the access only restriction to peak times in the morning and afternoon.

Hodson resident Paul Walton said: "We feel it is an effective compromise as the majority of the problem is caused during this time.

"The road is collapsing at the edges it can't cope with the number of vehicles and the verges are a mudbath,"

The transport commission meets at the Civic Offices on Tuesday at 7pm.
