A TWO-line written quotation by Paul McCartney from Penny Lane has raised £1,350 at auction in Swindon.
At the request of a friend, the Beatle wrote: "In Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs/Of every head he's had the pleasure to have known." He also wrote a dedication to the friend's father.
The piece was sold at Dominic Winter Book Auctions in Maxwell Street.
Before the auction, the firm's document specialist, Richard Westwood Brookes, said: "Original quotation lyrics of major Beatles songs are extremely rare on the market."
The auction house often offers Beatles-related material as lots, ranging from scarce memorabilia to autographed records, books and other items.
Penny Lane the location is a real street in Liverpool was issued in early 1967 as a double A-side with John Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever.
The record, which has since sold many millions of copies, reached number two in the singles charts, being kept from the top spot by Engelbert Humperdinck's Please Release Me.
It is widely regarded as the track which set the scene for what came to be known as the Summer of Love.
Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever also set the scene for the album which came to dominate that era the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
