Wootton Bassett earned their first Southern Counties South points of the season as they shared a 10-10 draw at Bournemouth side Oakmedians.

The home side started the game well with strong attacks from a committed back line.

But excellent defence by Bassett kept Oaks out for the first 20 minutes until their full-back breached the line to score in the corner.

Oakmedians' backs then worked the ball wide to the outside centre who crossed the line for the second, with both conversion attempts unsuccessful.

Trailing 10- 0 with 10 minutes left of the first period, the Wiltshire side's pack started to dominate in the scrum.

From a stolen ball against the head at the set-piece, scrum-half Mike Weeks jinked his way through the defence to score under the posts.

Sean Millwaters stepped up and added the extra two points.

And a further Millwaters penalty almost on the half-time whistle levelled the scores at 10-10.

With Bassett having most of the possession, and fine runs from late call ups winger John Spillane and full-back Steve Bloomer, only the final pass prevented Bassett and kept the score deadlocked.

Yet Oakmedians could have snatched the win late on, but missed an easy penalty from 15 metres to leave the scores tied at 10-10.

Player-manager Brian Smith said: "It was a better performance than in the previous two games.

"But there is still aspects of the game that we are failing in and we will be working on those this week during training."
