IT is almost two-and-a-half years since Swindon's Steam Museum opened its doors.

So it is baffling beyond belief that we are still having to ask questions about the effectiveness of signs to the attraction.

Many people shopping in the neighbouring Designer Outlet Village yesterday remained oblivious to its very existence. And those who have made the journey to the museum admit they found the signs throughout the town to be incomplete.

Today a new marketing exercise has been revealed, involving the erection of nine new signposts in the town and improvements to the existing signs.

And the museum has been promoting itself with publicity drives in railway magazines.

We welcome today's announcement, but we will continue to call for more improvements. More signs need to go up and Swindon Council should lobby hard for permission for a brown sign on the M4.

Most importantly, much more needs to be done at the main entrance to the Designer Outlet Village, from where Steam is hidden behind barriers and is hardly distinguishable from the rest of the shopping centre flag or no flag.

The museum is a wonderful attraction it is time we started shouting about it.
