COUNCILS and police in Wiltshire have been praised for their success in targeting crime, disorder and the fear of crime. A new joint report by the Audit Commission and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary has given the thumbs-up to Wiltshire's community safety partnerships for their work aimed at tackling crime and public safety issues.

The local authorities and police were given a two-star, or good, rating out of a possible three stars, and prospects for improvement were said to be "promising".

The community safety and crime and disorder partnerships involve Wiltshire County Council, Swindon Borough Council, district councils and Wiltshire Constabulary working together to reduce crime, fear of crime and anti-social behaviour.

A range of other agencies and community groups are also involved.

Among the positive initiatives noted by the inspectors were CCTV systems in Wootton Bassett and neighbourhood street wardens operating in Swindon.

Swindon was also praised for its Twilight football scheme for young people, which aims to reduce anti- social behaviour on Friday nights, and a scheme providing police checks and training for nightclub door staff.

The Audit Commission and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary made a joint inspection of the partner agencies earlier this year.
