IN the Letters column on Friday, October 4, Coun Judith Peppitt (Lib Dem, Freshbrook and Grange Park) went to great lengths to clarify the situation regarding the charge for green waste sacks.
She pointed out that the council has a dwindling supply of free compost bins available, and gave the number to call.
I spent so long listening to that phone ringing, I started to suffer auditory hallucinations I started to imagine someone on the council knew what they were doing.
Coming to my senses, I tried the number listed for the council recycling department.
On this number I received the message: "This number is temporarily out of order."
Then I tried the number for waste disposal and landfill sites. Engaged!
So I tried the number for refuse collection. Success! The phone was answered within two or three rings, and a very helpful man suggested that I try 464536 the number in Coun Peppitt's letter.
I explained, as quietly as I could, that that number appeared to be located in a locked vault, the key to which is secured beneath the Magic Roundabout.
He put me on hold (what, no Greensleeves?) while he went to find out what the score was.
He returned and gave me the kind of answer that confirms that our town councillors are not necessarily the sharpest knives in the block.
They stopped accepting requests for compost bins several months ago when they ran out of them!
Should the opportunity arise, I would be happy to introduce the council's right hand to its left, so that some kind of dialogue can be initiated between the two!
