WOMEN workers in Swindon are the eighth worst off compared to men in the UK, a survey has revealed.

Research by the GMB union showed Swindon's women workers, on average, earn 66.4 per cent of what men earn in a week, which is one of the 10 biggest gulfs in the country. The Swindon figure is only marginally better than the 61.1 per cent earnings compared to men for women in Limavady, Northern Ireland the worst in the UK and lags behind most affluent Haringey, in London, where women earn 96.4 percent of men's wages.

In Swindon, the research showed, women in full-time jobs earn £371.32 a week compared to men, who earn £559.41.

The research, conducted by the University of Durham, focused on a total of 147 UK local authority districts.
