SWINDON Independent Visitors Project is appealing for volunteers to befriend children in local authority care.
Based at Pinehurst People's Centre, the project is looking for couples or individuals who may be able to share their interests and hobbies with young people.
The children concerned may have no contact with their parents or natural family.
Scheme organiser Steph McQuade said: "This is a unique opportunity for couples or individuals to help to make a difference in the life of a child or young person providing support and helping them to grow and flourish.
"I feel very positive about the project and the positive contribution it is making to the life of looked after children and young people."
Swindon Social Services looks after about 200 children at any time and about 10 per cent of these are eligible to be helped by the scheme.
The emphasis is on regular weekly contact over an extended period, in order to build a relationship and develop trust between volunteer and young person.
On open evening for potential volunteers is being held in the Upper Room at the Pilgrim Centre, Regent Street, on Tuesday, March 18, from 7pm.
Alternatively, contact Heidi Sydor on 615049.
