Rob Wades in for South Wilts role
ROB Wade is no stranger to the captain's armband at South Wilts Cricket Club, so after Russell Rowe accepted Wiltshire's invitation to skipper the county for the 2003 season, Wade jumped at the chance of taking charge of Salisbury's premier side again, writes Mike Turner.
However, the 34-year-old Yorkshireman is quick to point out that because of South Wilts' remarkable batting strength, it might be the only way the opening batsman could guarantee his place in the starting line-up.
"There's going to be a lot of competition for places this season," he said. "We've got seven opening batsmen. I don't think I'd get in if I wasn't captain."
Wade, who joined the club 11 years ago, has skippered the side before, but relinquished the role to take up a job in Switzerland.
Wade says he will continue to draw on the vast experience of players at his disposal at the Lower Bemerton-based outfit who finished fourth in last season's Southern Premier League.
"We have got a lot of experience in the side. One problem is that we haven't really got any middle order batsmen. Russell always called us the flexi-six as our top six batsmen can bat in any order. But it's an entirely different game batting at six when the wickets are tumbling around you than it is opening."
Wade hopes the side can improve further on last season's achievements.
"We had a good season finishing fourth and winning the SEC Cup, but if we'd performed more consistently through the order we might have done even better."
Among the new arrivals already confirmed are ex- Hampshire batsman Jason Laney. Acquiring the signature of the much sought-after 28-year-old, who is also a useful off-spinner, was quite a coup for the club.
Melbourne-based James Seeary is also Salisbury- bound after being recommended by Roger Sillence who has played alongside him down under.
South Wilts are inviting players to join them for their nets practice which commence on Sunday from 4pm-6pm for five weeks at Chafyn Grove School. For more details ring 07799 627861.
