SWINDON Supermarine have renewed hope of a second 'great escape' after a fine 2-0 win at fellow Western Division strugglers Shepshed Dynamo.

First-half goals from Shaun Terry and Jimmy Carter leave Marine nine points from safety and looking capable of beating the drop again.

Ray Baverstock's side enjoyed the perfect start as Dave Gee broke down the right and crossed to Terry, who fired a left-foot drive into the roof of the net on five minutes. Toby Clark almost doubled the lead moments later, turning Gee's free-kick into the side-netting.

The impressive Gee also skimmed the bar with a sweet strike.

Shepshed enjoyed plenty of possession but could not muster a worthwhile attempt on goal and Marine managed to extend their advantage seconds before the break.

Mark Saunders' deep free-kick was met by Carter who thumped a crisp header beyond home keeper Andrew Harland.

The second period was littered with stoppages as four Shepshed players were shown yellow cards to match Marine's quartet of bookings for Carter, Gee, Saunders and Clark in the first half. Shepshed's Andy Davies was eventually dismissed for a wild lunge at Clark and any hope of the hosts staging a comeback disappeared.

Marine boss Baverstock was a happy man after a second successive victory to go with last week's 2-0 win over Warwick. "We were very positive and could have been two or three more ahead at half-time," he said.

"Second-half we performed just as well but in a different way. We're playing with some sort of pattern and there's light at the end of the tunnel."
