DEVIZES TOWN: PETE Tripp is aiming for Screwfix Direct Premier Division safety after seeing his side easily beaten by Maldon in Saturday's FA Vase quarter final.

The Devizes manager has tasted victory only once in the league since taking over from Ray Baverstock in December, while at the same time leading his side to the last eight of the prestigious competition.

Although angered by the lack of desire shown by his side on Saturday, Tripp believes Devizes' defeat may help his side in their bid to beat the drop.

He said: "It makes the job a bit easier for me. If I go out and get players now and they're Vase-tied, then so what.

"I have had half an eye on that because you can't allow lads to leave the club otherwise you'll end up turning up for Vase games with nothing.

"We've lost Gareth Davies and Chris Copp and, with them, a bit of fight has gone from the side. If we lose more players, at least I won't have to worry about the Vase when I replace them."

Devizes come crashing back down to earth on Saturday when they entertain Bath City Reserves at Nursteed Road.

City, managed by former Chippenham Town captain Lee Burns, are currently in ninth spot and beat Devizes 2-1 at Twerton Park in the corresponding fixture.

Said Tripp: "It will be a tough game and will bring us back to reality. We have done quite well in the last couple of league games and have got to pick that up again.

"I shouldn't have to motivate them again after Saturday.

"The league is bread and butter stuff. We need to get back in there and in amongst it. None of us want to be in the First Division next season."
