POLICE have appealed for neighbours of Calne's Family Health Centre to be vigilant after vandals stuffed lighted paper tapers into the building's letterbox.
A spokesman for the centre, in Broken Cross, said nothing was damaged, but warned confidential documents including patients' referrals could have been destroyed in the attack.
Police suspect the burning tapers may have been put into the letterbox over the weekend of February 22-23 by a group of children spotted by neighbours slipping in and out of the metal railings which house the letterbox, at the entrance to the surgery.
"It appears as though children might have done it," a spokesman said.
"They just don't think. They're on holiday and they're bored. Luckily there was nothing important in the letterbox at the time, but there easily could have been.
"It would be nice if residents living nearby could keep an eye out and contact the police if they see anything like this happening."
WPC Rachel Jennings, stationed at Calne Police Station, said the centre had no reason to believe anyone had a grudge against it.
She said if anyone has any information about the incident they should contact her at the station on (01249) 812106.
