We have much to be proud of in Devizes, but in today's state of constant change we cannot afford to relax and take our eye off the ball.
Devizes is a special place, partly due to its isolated and scenic location, partly due to its architectural heritage, and to a great extent because of the fierce loyalty of its townsfolk.
But also because of high standards of care and cleanliness maintained by our councils.
Kennet district, the town council and Wiltshire County Council attract much criticism, but for the most part (and possibly as a result) they keep our town neat, tidy and attractive.
It is important to ensure that things stay that way.
Our councils are forced to react to an intensifying stream of policy initiatives originating from areas outside of their control.
Right now these include, among others, the 20mph limit on Long Street, the relocation of the hospital, the review of the Conservation Area, and the redevelopment of the North Gate site.
When the councils come up with their plans to deal with these matters, it is important that the rest of us make sure that the quality of our town doesn't suffer in the process.
The Trust For Devizes tries to keep up with all these developments, but we depend on the eyes and ears of our fellow townsfolk to spot any changes that worry them, and let us know.
Two recent examples have been the proposal to put a mini-roundabout half way down Long Street, by Bridewell Street, and the construction of concrete bus stop areas on the edge of The Green.
The roundabout signs and paraphernalia would have ruined the view down Long Street, and the bus stops could disturb the kerb-line and undermine the trees on The Green.
In both cases, we are working for other approaches, without spoiling the schemes themselves.
We are not always successful, but please can we appeal to all your readers of the Gazette in Devizes, to get in touch with the trust if you come across worrying new development, in case we can intervene and help.
