CHIPPENHAM'S inconsistent form continued on Saturday 1 March as their faint promotion hopes were shattered by South West Two East strugglers Amersham and Chiltern.
The fourth placed visitors were beaten for the seventh time this season by an Amersham side battling to avoid the drop.
The result leaves Chippenham four points behind second placed Maidenhead with only three league games left to play. Maidenhead also have a game in hand.
Current leaders Oxford Harlequins, 82-0 winners over Stow on the Wold on Saturday, look set to clinch the division's one automatic promotion place.
The second placed finishers facing an end-of season play-off with their counterparts from South West Two West for the right to join them.
Although it would take a minor miracle for Chippenham to reach the play-offs, they still have big part to play in the promotion race. Both third placed Swanage and Wareham and leaders Oxford have still to come to Allington Field.
Chippenham have a home friendly against Southern Counties South side Wootton Bassett on Saturday.
