In response to your article last week, perhaps this letter will explain the reason for Melksham's anger at the vote to allow yet another fast food takeaway in the town.
Only one member supported my contention that a town should be allowed to decide what it wants to have in the high street and that there was guidance in a Government document which permitted this consideration.
Almost all of the members supported the planning officer's view that permission should be given.
Therefore I have sought the views and advice of our MP, Michael Ancram, and I hope to fight on and stop this relentless tide of takeaways engulfing this town.
As for the 'Melksham lot' always voting against Bradford on Avon, this sort of comment has to be viewed in the light of the following:
l Bradford on Avon produces many planning applications and over the years it seems to me their Town Council objects to most.
l A planning officer gives planning advice which is not always in support of the town council's objection.
l If any member does not accept this advice, then a good planning reason has to be stated.
District councillors are not allowed to vote with their hearts they have to follow planning laws and vote accordingly.
There are occasions when a chink exists and common-sense can be used that is when differences of opinion come to the fore and I must say that Melksham does not always get the support of the 'other lot'.
Brian Mudge,
Spa Road,
Melksham.
