WATER temperatures could rise in west Wiltshire's five swimming pools if a request is granted.

West Wiltshire District Council, which runs the pools, has been asked to consider raising the temperature of its pools once or twice a week to make the water more comfortable for people with some health conditions.

Existing council policy says the pools should be heated to 30 Celsius, but it has been suggested a temperature of 33C would make them more comfortable.

Council officers have said while any change would help a small number of people, the technical financial and maintenance implications make it a complex issue.

Guidance from the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management says the recommended maximum temperature for competitive swimming is 27 Celsius, recreation is 28C, children and teaching is 29C, and babies, young children and people with disabilities are 30 Celsius.

The request will be considered by the council cabinet on Wednesday.
