A CHICKEN and chefs were among those who took to the streets and entered into the spirit of Wiltshire's annual pancake races on Tuesday.

The 15th annual Bradford on Avon pancake race across the town bridge attracted more than a dozen entries and has been hailed the most successful yet.

Organiser Jon Durrant said: "We changed the rules this year, and they had to toss the pancakes five times during the run.

"I have been organising the race since 1988 and this was one of the best. We had a lot of people there, loads watching. One person said Bradford on Avon just would not be the same on Shrove Tuesday without the race."

The men's race was won by Craig Guthrie, of the Dandy Lion, while the first woman back was Lisa Campbell, of Stones.

Chris Stevens ran the race in a full chicken outfit.

Mr Durrant said: "He could hardly see where he was going, and finished last but it was brilliant.

"It was a good laugh. Everybody had fun."

Dozens of people gathered in Trowbridge town centre for the town's annual Fore Street dash. First place in the men's race went to Edward Kirk, of Scholars, while Monya Hamdia, of Slimming World, won the women's race. The relay race was won by the team from Berkeleys Caf.

Crowds also gathered in Chippenham to watch a series of races up and down the High Street.

First prize in the chefs and caterers class went to Daniel Wyatt, of the Angel Hotel, while legal firm Wood Awdry and Ford won the company and organisation races.

The firm raised £140 through sponsorship which it will be donating to the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

The winners' plaques and non-stick frying pans were presented by Chippenham mayor Richard Meek.

Joanne Tanner of Concept Staffing won the fancy dress race and the children's race was won by Samantha Anscombe of Wiltshire College Pre-school. Charlie Howe of Acorn Pre-school won the second children's race.

The event was organised by Chippen-ham Town Council and the Chippenham Town Centre Management Partnership, with support from Chippenham firm Invensys Rail Systems.
