ROAD improvements have been promised after a lollipop lady was knocked down outside a school.

Patricia Hefnawy, 69, broke her leg in the accident, which happened outside Holt Primary School, near Trowbridge, at the end of January.

A 165-signature petition has been presented to Wiltshire County Council, which now plans to install safety measures outside the school.

Terry Chivers, county councillor for Holt, said: "I am pleased that the council has acted so fast.

"I still feel sorry that an accident has had to happen before we see improvements."

The accident happened just before the children were due to finish school at 3pm.

It is believed that a parent was turning her car when her foot slipped on the accelerator, hitting Mrs Hefnawy and pinning her to a wall.

The council's regulatory committee was this week due to consider proposals to install flashing lights and to alter the road to make crossing safer.

The police have been asked to enforce waiting restrictions on the road and Cllr Chivers is calling for the 30mph speed limit to be reduced to 20mph.

He is also asking the council to consider more education of drivers on the dangers of parking in and around schools.
