MARCH 7: DEBT-RIDDEN builder Roy Sloper is the latest Wiltshire driver to be banned from the roads for a drink-drive offence.

Father-of-one Sloper, 58, of West Ashton Road, Trowbridge, was nabbed by police officers as he drove his Nissan along Canal Road on January 6.

Officers smelt alcohol on Sloper's breath and asked him to take a roadside breath test, which he failed.

Taken back to Melksham police station, Sloper agreed to provide officers with a blood sample because of his low breath reading.

Sloper's levels were measured at 88mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.

Admitting the drink-drive charge at a magistrates' court hearing in Trowbridge on Thursday, Sloper faced a minimum one-year ban.

Christopher Smythe, defending, said Sloper was deep in debt, with the mandatory driving ban only adding to his problems.

Mr Smythe said: "He was only a little bit over the limit which can be put down to bad judgement on his part.

"There was nothing about the driving which raised concern.

"This is not a man in the best of circumstances at the moment.

"These circumstances are made worse by this regrettable court appearance."
