THE latest plans for the former Usher's brewery site in Trowbridge have been submitted to West Wiltshire District Council.

Developer Foinavon has completely revised the application for the regeneration of the former bottling plant to answer concerns voiced by councillors over earlier plans.

Development director Paul Bench said: "We have spent the last months working to overcome concerns raised by district council officers with regard to our application.

"This new scheme benefits from a number of significant changes and we have every reason to believe that this full, detailed planning application will be received positively by planning officers."

The bottling plant is part of a £21m scheme to convert the entire site for a mix of retail, housing and leisure uses.

Foinavon has stressed that one part of the scheme cannot go ahead without the others, but plans had to be put on hold when the district council turned down the application for the bottling plant on the grounds of the design of the buildings and its effect on people living nearby.

Mr Bench said: "We have altered the position of the retail units to produce a design solution that respects the indigenous scale and material of the adjacent conservation area." The retail units would be fronted by homes along British Row and The Conigre, with a winebar between the residential and retail frontages.

Foinavon claims the plans for the 8.5-acre site, which include 111 new homes as well as a leisure complex, a car park and shops, could rejuvenate the town centre, bringing in up to £3.4m of spending a year. Town and district councillor Jeff Osborn said: "I am glad the new plans have come in. They seem to be vastly improved.

"There is plenty of demand for this type of retail development in the town."

Big names already linked with the site include Marks and Spencer, Laura Ashley and Next.
