WESTLECOT are celebrating their first national indoor championship success.

The ladies' team are the toast of the club after comfortably defeating Cheshunt 48-29 at Basingstoke in the final of the Women's Over 60s Double Rinks.

It was club's first title success since the indoor section opened in 1983.

The two senior ladies rinks were in awesome form destroying Cornish side Carnmoggas in the semi-final 58-23 and then beating Cheshunt by 19 shots in the final.

It was ample compensation for the Westlecot ladies as they had been forced into two late changes last year and lost in the semi-finals staged in Nottingham.

However, this time around, they put that 2002 disappointment behind them despite having to replace skip Val Mortimer who broke her arm a couple of days before the Basingstoke showdown.

And of course the Westlecot national final bogey was at last laid to rest.

Last year Westlecot had suffered the agony of seeing representatives lose in three national finals and one semi-final.

But there was no doubting the senior ladies this time in their second successive semi-final.

Doris Woodley's rink were 17-3 up after 10 ends against Carnmoggas and just powered away to a 25-shot victory.

Josie Lloyd replaced Val Mortimer as skip of the other rink and was equally impressive turning an 11-6 deficit at 10 ends into a 23-13 win.

The final against Cheshunt was a tight affair up to half way with Woodley only leading 9-6 after 10 ends and Lloyd one shot down at 10-9.

But then Westlecot took command with Woodley forging into a 22-12 lead at 18 ends and winning by 12 shots.

Lloyd led 16-14 at 15 ends, 19-15 at 18 before increasing her advantage to seven shots on the 21st and final end.
