A LORRY shed its load across Great Western Way this morning, causing long delays for commuters joining junction 16 of the M4.

The scrap lorry overturned while travelling towards the M4 on Great Western Way at the Blagrove Roundabout at 5am, spilling 20 tonnes of metal across the westbound carriageway.

Police closed the carriageway leading towards junction 16 and traffic was diverted through the Blagrove Industrial Estate.

A crane was brought in and an industrial magnet borrowed from Cooper's Non Ferrous Metals of Gipsy Lane, to clear the road because of the amount of metal blocking the way.

The driver of the lorry suffered minor injuries and the accident caused tailbacks stretching half a mile.

The fire brigade attended the scene, along with an emergency support unit from Westlea.

The accident added to the misery of commuters who are already facing delays on Great Western Way because of resurfacing works to the road.

The dual carriageway is reduced to single lane traffic near the Mannington roundabout.
