PUPILS of a Swindon school gave up junk food for the day to help a good cause.

Students at St Joseph's School's upper site went without their usual chips and sweets for a lunch of bread and soup in aid of third world development charity CAFOD.

And the tuck shop closed for the day, with young people donating their money to the charity instead.

The bread and soup only applied to the upper school, with the lower school going without snacks.

The event was the first in a charity fortnight at the school, with fun and games planned for Red Nose Day on Friday including a netball tournament.

School chaplain Father Kevin Hennessey said: "A lot of the pupils saw it as fun, but some were a bit surprised when they turned up and couldn't have their usual chips."

It was a bit of a shock but they could see the value in it.

"Soup was not their favourite dish but many of them were willing to join in with it for charity."
