A SWINDON organisation is part of what it calls a pioneering partnership to support university research in the Aerospace and Defence Sector.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has teamed up with BAE Systems to promote research addressing the long-term needs of the aerospace and defence sector.

The EPSRC, based at Polaris House in North Star, is the UK's main agency for funding research in engineering and the physical sciences. It invests more than £400 million a year in research and postgraduate training to help the nation handle the next generation of technological change.

This is the first time that such a strong financial commitment has been made between EPSRC and a blue-chip company in this way. Over the next five years, it will mean up to £30m will be allocated to research in this area.

EPSRC's manager for engineering, Dr Elizabeth Hylton, said: "The Aerospace and Defence sector is continually changing and evolving.

"To ensure that the UK keeps up with the pace of change, the strongest academic research in engineering and technology needs to be nurtured and supported.

"That research must then be translated into industry practice".

BAE Systems' head of university partnerships, Prof John Murphy, said: "We continually evolve our capabilities for our changing business."
