Chippenham's Under 15s put in a solid display against Oxfordshire county champions Grove at Allington Field but were edged out 26-17.
The hosts, fielding a new-look side, opted to play into a strong wind for the first half and restricted the visitors to a 19-0 half-time lead.
Grove played with equal determination and spirit and were rewarded with three tries, thanks to their strong-running back play.
Changes to the starting line-up helped Chippenham after the break and better ball for the home side enabled No 8 Mike Smith to score the first of his two tries under the posts, Fraser Brown converting.
Brown then crossed the line himself after some sustained pressure.
Grove hit back and scored another try after a lapse in concentration and some poor defending by Chippenham.
But the hosts responded again with Mike Smith scoring his second of the match.

CHIPPENHAM Under 11s will take on Bath side Walcot in a friendly on Friday.
It will be the first time the team have played under floodlights.
The club recently purchased some mobile lights and are keen to give all the playing sections the chance to play evening matches.
