FIREFIGHTERS changed tactics and deliberately started fires rather than putting them out at a safety demonstration day on Saturday.
Corsham fire station was lit up all day as visitors watched firefighters demonstrate ways of keeping their homes safe.
The most dramatic demonstration showed what not to do if faced with a blazing chip pan. When water was poured on the fire the flames shot up into the sky.
"It was quite an eye-opener for people. When they saw how high the flames went into the sky they realised that could be their kitchen," said Station Officer Martin Hancock.
The firefighters then demonstrated the correct way to put a chip pan fire out by smothering the flames with a blanket.
"It really brought it home to people and they realised just how dangerous chip pan fires can be if not dealt with correctly," said Mr Hancock.
Other safety advice included information on the best place to put smoke detectors.
"The best place is on the landing at the top of the stairs and in the sitting room or by the front door," said Mr Hancock.
"If people put them in the kitchen they do tend to go off a lot," he added.
