TENNIS: SALISBURY A are shaping up as likely survivors in the Sarum League relegation battle after one of their strongest line-ups won well at Riverside on Saturday.
Three sets from the return match this weekend will be enough to secure their Division One place for next winter, which would leave the one remaining relegation spot for Downton A, who have finished their fixtures, or Andover, currently a point behind them with two matches to play.
James Fletcher and Darrell Amison both won with their partners in all four sets in Salisbury's 7-1 win.
Riverside's consolation was achieved by Carolyn Barry and Barbara Bruce who halved the ladies rubber against Janie Melhuish and Diana O'Connell.
Andover fell 5-3 in their latest outing at Winchester A, so must now seek their needed point at home to Riverside A, or away to the champions Wellow A in the very last match.
There was movement at the top of Division Two on Sunday when Romsey won their last match against Winchester B to edge them out of second place.
However, Winchester B have a further match at home to Alderbury and will finish as runners-up if they win it.
Riverside D moved to mid-table respectability in Division Five of the Wiltshire Winter League when beating Devizes C and being given two more points from the concession by Biddestone B of their next fixture.
Tom Compton and Anna Cutler took the titles in the finals of the Junior Rankings Masters Event at Salisbury Tennis Club.
Eight boys and eight girls playing in Saturday's knock-out stages had qualified with performances over ten months.
Beaten semi-finalists were James Hammond, Kenneth Burns, Jessica Chaplin and Catriona Coen.
