WOOTTON BASSETT were victorious in the battle of the mid-week specialists last night.
Pete Yeardley's side triumphed 3-1 at Gloucester United to pull further away from the lower places in the Hellenic Premier Division.
Both club's are able to field stronger sides during mid-week, but it was Bassett who cruised to victory thanks to a brace from new Rylands Way darling Ben Gascoigne.
Ben Jarrett also hit the target as the Wiltshire visitors roared into a 3-0 lead at Meadow Park.
Gascoigne had the chance to complete a memorable hat-trick, but fluffed a spot-kick, before Gloucester pulled back an 89th-minute consolation goal.
The victory leaves Bassett looking relatively safe in mid-table with 37 points.
Pewsey Vale's Premier Division future looks less secure after another convincing defeat.
Nobby Wootton's beleaguered boys went down 4-1 at Henley Town.
Pewsey were level at 1-1 at the interval, but second-half goals from Arden, Witt and Lawrence leaves Vale staring down the barrel in the bottom three.
Fairford stay sixth after a useful 1-0 win over Shortwood.
Pacy Gareth Davies' 80th-minute goal was enough to keep Cinder Lane boss Mark Webb happy.
Shrivenham took the honours in the Division One West derby, sealing a 2-0 win at mid-table neighbours New College Academy.
Herring (59) and Pugh (89) were on target at Hunts Copse to keep the visitors in the top 10.
Elsewhere, Harrow Hill drew 1-1 with Clanfield.
