THE Record Office project involves the county council buying land on the livestock market site in Cocklebury Road, Chippenham, from North Wiltshire District Council.
At the last county council cabinet meeting this project bid was approved. There were only six members of the cabinet present. Of those six, half were also members of North Wiltshire District Council, one of these actually chairing the meeting. So district councillors, through the casting vote of the chairman, could outvote all other members. To add to this, a fourth member was a councillor for a North Wiltshire division.
And who directly benefits from this approval? North Wiltshire District Council, which owns the site.
There are some very serious questions concerning political accountability to be answered.
It looks to me like one of those good old political stitch ups. Or perhaps it not a good old political stitch up if it is done by North Wiltshire district councillors? In the meantime political accountability is down the drain.
