COUNCILLORS are locked in a row with housing developers over the naming of a new street.
Maplecroft Developments are unhappy with the proposed name Bryant Fields for the road to the rear of the High Street in Corsham.
The name was originally proposed by the town council.
Maplecroft said the name implies that the houses were built by Bryant homes and proposed three other names.
Corsham Town Council said the name had a historical background and refused to back down.
"Miss Bryant was a local painter of some repute and her father was a postmaster," said Councillor Roy Jackson.
The council has no power to name the road and can only object to the developer's suggestions.
"It is not for the district or town council to pick names unless the developer agrees with it," explained David Martin the town clerk at the council meeting on Monday.
Maplecroft suggested the names Market Yard, Stable Court or High Street Mews but the full town council objected to these and wanted the developers to agree to Bryant Fields.
"We do not support local names enough and I really believe we should be doing what we want. I understand the developers point of view but it is just a commercial one," said Coun Jackson.
If the developer still refuses the name Bryant Fields then the other three suggestions will be put before the Area Four Committee at North Wiltshire District Council.
If they also object to these names the decision will go before a magistrate.
